TOP-UP BSC. NURSING, PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING AND MIDWIFERY PROGRAMMES FOR NURSES AND MIDWIVES
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (N&MC) presents its compliments to you.
The attention of the N&MC has been drawn to social media publications by the College of Health Sciences, Faculty of Allied Health Science and the Department of Nursing of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The said publications are advertising Top-Up BSc. Nursing, Public Health Nursing and Midwifery Programmes which will be hosted at some selected Nursing and Midwifery Training Colleges.
Following from the above, the N&MC states as follows;
The Professional Accreditation that was granted by N&MC to KNUST to train Nurses and Midwives at the degree level is campus specific and non-transferable without the request authorization of N&MC.
The selected Nursing and Midwifery Training Colleges have not obtained Professional Accreditation from N&MC to train Nurses and Midwives at the degree level.
The N&MC has not been furnished with Programme Accreditation for the said programmes from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
N&MC, has not been involved in any discussion on processes for rolling out such programmes.
The KNUST and the selected Nursing and Midwifery Training Colleges have erred in mounting the said programmes and advertising same without the requisite accreditation from N&MC and GTEC.
The mandate of N&MC according to Section 54 of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act 2013, (Act 857), is to secure in the public interest the highest standards of training and practice of nursing and midwifery. Additionally, the combined effect of section 55 (a)(e) and (h) of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act 2013, (Act 857) puts the Council in the centre of any arrangement that concerns training of Professional Nurses and Midwives in the Country.
The N&MC is by this letter bringing the irregularity to your attention, for immediate steps to be initiated towards the correction of same.
