Unveiling the Hierarchy of Ranks and Positions in Ghanaian Educational Sector - From Director-General to Pupil-Teacher"


 In the Ghanaian government, there are various ranks and positions within the educational sector, each with its own requirements for appointment and promotion. These positions range from Director-General to Pupil-Teacher.

The Director-General is a political appointment and can be filled by anyone chosen by the government. The Deputy Director-General, on the other hand, assists the Director-General in their duties. 


In Ghana, there are two Deputy Director-Generals responsible for Access & Quality and Management Services respectively.

The rank of Director I is obtained through long service and is reserved for regional or divisional directors. Director II is also achieved through long service and is held by District Directors, who oversee the activities of stakeholders in their respective districts. The position of Deputy Director is an assistant to the District Director, and it is also obtained through long service.

To reach the rank of Assistant Director I, one must have served for a significant amount of time and may be appointed as a Circuit supervisor or head of a Senior High School. 


Assistant Director II is also earned through long service, as well as promotion upon obtaining a master's degree or Ph.D. This rank may lead to an appointment as a Head of a basic school.

The Principal Superintendent rank is attained through long service and is the entry point for first-degree holders. It is the minimum requirement for appointment as a teacher in a Senior High School, and now also the minimum requirement for appointment as a basic school teacher.


Senior Superintendent I requires four years of service on the Senior Superintendent II rank. Senior Superintendent II is the entry point for diploma certificate holders, which used to be the requirement for an appointment as a basic school teacher.


Superintendent I requires four years of service on the Superintendent II rank, which is the entry point for (Cert A) holders.


 Lastly, Pupil-Teacher is the rank of those employed in the service with SSCE, WASSCE, and GCE or those who were unable to pass all their papers in college before employment. Previously, individuals could be posted to this rank without completing all their courses in college, leading some to retire without making progress.
